Ceramic Coating vs PPF: What to Recommend to Each Client
Two products, two completely different jobs
Clients often ask for "ceramic" when they actually need PPF, and vice versa. As a detailer, your job is to translate what they want (a car that stays looking new) into what they need (the right product for their use case and budget).
Ceramic coating: what it actually does
- Hydrophobic — water beads and rolls off
- UV protection — slows oxidation and fading
- Chemical resistance — bird droppings, tree sap, road grime wash off easier
- Gloss enhancement — deeper, wetter look
- Does NOT protect against rock chips or scratches
Lifespan: 2-7 years depending on product and prep.
Paint protection film (PPF): what it actually does
- Physical barrier — absorbs rock chips, light scratches, swirl marks
- Self-healing — minor scratches disappear with heat
- UV stable on premium films
- Can be combined with ceramic on top for hydrophobic + impact protection
Lifespan: 7-10 years on quality films.
The recommendation matrix
| Client profile | Recommend |
|---|---|
| Daily driver, suburban, budget-conscious | Ceramic coating only |
| Highway commuter, lots of motorway km | PPF front-end + ceramic over everything |
| Performance / supercar owner | Full PPF + ceramic on top |
| Show car / garage queen | Ceramic only (PPF can yellow if not premium) |
| Leased vehicle returning in 2-3 years | Ceramic — better ROI vs PPF cost |
How to sell without sounding pushy
Don't lead with the product. Lead with the client's concern.
- "Are you worried more about looks or about damage?"
- "How long do you plan to keep the car?"
- "Where do you drive most — city, highway, off-road?"
The answers tell you which product to recommend, and the client feels heard instead of upsold.
Pricing both correctly
Both services have high material costs and require precise pricing math. A poorly-priced ceramic job actually loses money once you factor in the prep paint correction. Track materials per job, not per month.
The combo that prints money
PPF on front end (bumper, hood, fenders, mirrors) + ceramic over the entire car. Average ticket: €2,000-3,500. Margin: 45-55% when priced correctly. This is the package to push for clients who can afford it — they get the best of both products, you get the highest-margin job in detailing.
